With Spring Training just getting underway, the 2021 version of Fanfest continues today on KNBR 104.5 FM and 680 AM with RHP Kevin Gausman and IF Tommy La Stella scheduled to join Papa & Lund from 12–1 p.m. It all leads up to the main event tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 20 where front office execs, coaches and players will call in all day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to preview the 2021 season. In honor of Black History Month, we are spotlighting our Public Address announcer Renel Brooks-Moon who is entering her 22nd season with the San Francisco Giants.

Most affectionately known as “Renel,” she received a B.A. in English Literature from Mills College and began her career in Bay Area radio and television broadcasting. In 2000, Renel was honored to be chosen as the Public Address Announcer for the San Francisco Giants as the team found a new home at 24 Willie Mays Plaza. San Francisco Giants club President of Baseball Operations, Farhan Zaidi, announced today the club’s player development staff and affiliate staffs for the 2021 season. As previously announced, invitations have been sent to the Sacramento River Cats, Richmond Flying Squirrels, Eugene Emeralds and San Jose Giants pending the completion of the process.

Happy New Year! I hope you are safe and healthy and looking forward to the upcoming baseball season. While our state and country continue to face many challenges resulting from the pandemic, I am feeling more optimistic as vaccines begin to become available in our communities. We certainly have a ways to go until we get past the pandemic, but we are encouraged and can see a pathway to welcoming our fans back to Oracle Park.

The San Francisco Giants announced the signings of 34 International prospects today, including 19 from Venezuela, 11 from the Dominican Republic, one from Curacao, one from Colombia, one from Mexico and one from Panama. Included in today’s announced signings are 11 pitchers, 10 outfielders, eight infielders and five catchers. Diego Velasquez, a shortstop from Venezuela, ranks 22nd on MLB’s top 30 International prospects list for the 2021 season.

The Giant Race presented by Alaska Airlines is thrilled to announce our new virtual fitness series, 2021RUN. There will be a total of 12 monthly-themed challenges, including the four Giant Races: Scottsdale, San Jose, Sacramento, and San Francisco. Last week, the Giants and Major League Baseball announced the changes to Minor League Base- ball that will take place beginning next season. As a part of that change, the Giants have invited the Sacramento River Cats to be their Triple-A affiliate, the Richmond Flying Squirrels to be their Double-A affiliate, the Eugene Emeralds to be their Class-A Advanced affiliate and the San Jose Giants to be their Class A affiliate as part of the league’s new Player Development League. RHP Kevin Gausman accepted the Giants qualifying offer for the 2021 season last Wednesday and will return on a one-year contract next season. Gausman will help anchor the Giants rotation next season after posing a staff-leading 3.62 ERA in 2020 and striking out 79 batters in 59.2 innings. His 11.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings rate was the best of his career last season while his 4.9 strikeout-to-walk ratio was also a career-best.
